Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The position as Research specialist is placed at the unit of Risk Assessment at the Institute of
Environmental Medicine. It aims broadly for translational 21st Century pathwaybased systems toxicology for purpose of developing omicsbased predictive methods and biomarkers for safety assessment of chemicals, nanomaterials and drug molecules, primarily through the execution of integrative bioinformatics.

Your mission

This position concerns internationally competitive applied research in the bioinformatics and systems toxicology area. The successful applicant will conduct bioinformaticsdriven research in the toxicological research field. Relevant activity includes applying cancerbiology inspired datadriven toxicity pathway identification, analysis, visualization and tools to interpreting complex biological processes, considering also highthroughput and highcontent screening data. The applied techniques and made efforts should form a systems toxicologydirected in vitro and in silico, nonanimal based, strategy for safety evaluation including with consideration of regulatory needs.

The candidate is expected to develop a research program and to acquire external funding related to the research area. He/she will be responsible for planning, conducting, and publishing scientific work, for initiating and maintaining national and international connections with relevant collaborators, and for disseminating gained knowledge though common scientific media. Duties also include intra-departmental consultation on bioinformatics / computational toxicology-related issues.

The position is permanent.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Assessment criteria

The position requires a strong background in biology (PhD), and demonstrated expertise of integrative methods for bioinformatics analysis and visualization from a systems and predictive toxicology translational perspective. The candidate must have extensive experience in developing bioinformatics workflows to test research questions, and in applying them to predicting toxicity of chemicals and/or nanomaterials. Practical and theoretical knowledge of R/Bioconductor methods for the analysis of RNAseq, pathway analysis (e.g., by gene set enrichment analysis methods) is a must. Experience with and knowledge of data management and bio curation will be viewed positively. Demonstrated experience to deliver “service bioinformatics work” on diverse types of omics and highthroughput screening data, knowledge of IPR issues and EUfunded collaborations is a further plus.

Documented teaching skills at a level of PhD courses, excellent knowledge of spoken and written scientific English as well as strong presentation skills is required.

We stress broad scientific and bioinformatics experience as well as translational experience related to regulatory and societal tools development when assessing applicants.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
