The department of clinical sciences, Danderyd hospital (KI DS) was established in its current form 1993. Annually, about 400 students undergo their basic medical training at KI DS, including the units of surgery and urology, anesthesiology and intensive care, radiology, internal medicine, cardiology and clinical physiology, clinical chemistry, obstetrics and gynecology as well as orthopedic surgery. The department conducts clinical research in several different areas. The department has about 90 registered PhD students and annually about 10 defend their dissertations for a doctoral degree in medicine. Approximately 200-250 articles are published annually in international peer-review journals. The department annually provides several courses for specialist competence in various subjects as well as further education courses for specialists and postgraduate courses.

The department of Surgery and Urology at Danderyd Hospital is a large unit with extensive activities, about 460 employees, about 30 000 planned outpatient visits (of which 7 500 Urology) and about 6 500 surgical procedures each year. The unit conducts research focusing on diseases according to the hospital's patient assignments (Surgery and Urology), as well as education and training in clinical medicine (surgery) for medical students. The unit has several research supervisors and PhD students with 1 to 3 dissertations annually and a well-structured research unit. The unit publishes 30-40 articles per year in international peer-reviewed journals.

Your mission

The employment as Senior Lecturer and specialist in Surgery or Urology includes an overall responsibility for courses in surgery in the medical program at KI DS and developing research about common surgical diseases at KI-DS as well as in collaboration with other departments at KI. The position will include responsibility for the course in clinical medicine, focus on Surgery, in the current medical program and for clinical medicine 3 – focus on surgery, in the new 6-year medical program, but may also include other educational responsibilities. An important part of the assignment will be to develop and communicate an academic leadership in education and research at the department of surgery and urology.

The employment is combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at the department of Surgery and Urology at Danderyd Hospital, where clinical experience and knowledge are of great value in order to organize clinical education and research in the best way. The position is intended to be divided as 50 % clinical work as a specialist trained physician at Danderyd Hospital and 50 % education and research as a Senior Lecturer at KI DS.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The holder of the position must have experience of education in surgery and/or urology. The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in surgery or urology at Danderyd Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in surgery or urology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the employment requires cooperation with other departments in the region, the holder must have documented experience of collaboration between different departments and of leading educational activities.

Since the position includes patient contact the applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown experience in being responsible for a course or part of a course in education at basic or advanced level.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
