A position as laboratory technician is available in the research group of Professor Kenneth Chien. The team consists of physicians and scientists who are focused on studying cardiogenesis in multiple model organisms and its implications for regenerative medicine. The research goal is to find novel pathways and principles for regenerative medicine in general, and to repair damaged cardiac muscle cells in particular. The employment is a substitute (vikariat, temporary position).
Your main priority will be to provide assistance to a senior researcher in the lab in the execution of experiments relating to the study of salamander heart regeneration. This will involve: cryosectioning, immunofluorescent staining, in situ hybridization, high-content imaging, generation of BSL-2 level recombinant proteins and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Additionally, you will be required to assist with ultrasound imaging of salamander hearts. Depending on the project progress you will be expected to learn and apply new techniques. You may also be asked to assist lab manager as needed with inventory, orders and distribution of general lab supplies.
You are thorough, diligent and used to documenting and organizing your work. You work in a clean and precise way. We expect you to be a positive, flexible person with good communication skills who appreciates being in a highly dynamic international research team. Due to the progressive nature of a scientific project we expect you to be comfortable with learning new methods. You can work independently after training but are still a team player and very service minded. Strong organizational skills as well as the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, assignments, and roles will be critical.
A suitable background is a Master’s degree, within an area which the employer deems to be relevant. You must have a good understanding of basic molecular biology techniques and experience in cryosectioning and basic histology techniques. Experience with operation of a FACS machine, tissue culture and high-content imaging on a scanner is meriting.
Experience of successfully and independently running even a small project from beginning to end including basic interpretation of your data with reportable results will be highly valued.
Furthermore, you must have excellent communication skills in English in both writing and speaking. The working language in the lab is English.
Personal skills will be highly valued when assessing the candidates.
