Karolinska Institutet,

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Division for Molecular Metabolism is located the Department for Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Karolinska Institutet, which totally constists of 12 divisions with around 270 co-workers. The research at the department has a strong focus on discovery of mechanisms that cause disease and encompasses different areas such as biochemistry, biomaterials, chemical biology, functional genomics, inflammation, metabolism, neurobiology, physiological chemistry, structural biology, and vascular biology. The Division for Molecular Metabolism conducts world-leading research in the area of mitochondrial biology, which includes studies of basal regulation of mitochondrial gene expression and pathophysiological mechanisms in mitochondrial disease. The division interacts closely with the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska Universitety Hospital in Solna. CMMS is a national centre for neonatal screening as well as for laboratory investigations and follow-up of patients with inborn errors of metabolism.

Description of the subject area

Mitochondria have a central role in our physiology and act as hubs for metabolism. The electron transport chain harvests energy from carbohydrates, fat and protein, to produce the cellular energy currency ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. ATP is used as an energy source for a wide variety of metabolic processes in our cells. Inherited defects in mitochondrial function lead to serious diseases in humans and deficient mitochondrial function is also important in age-associated common diseases and ageing. During the last decade there have been several important breakthroughs in our understanding of how mitochondrial function is regulated. Mitochondrial biology is currently a very dynamic research area that attracts a lot of interest because of its strong connection to human disease.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The applicant is expected to pursue successful, internationally leading research in mitochondrial biology. In addition, the applicant is expected to participate in laboratory investigations of inborn errors of metabolism at CMMS, in the education of basic and doctoral students and in supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral students, as well as be part of the future development of the Division for Molecular Metabolism and Karolinska Institutet. The applicant is expected to function as a research group leader with delegated responsibility for grants, personel, work environment and administrative duties at the department. Interaction with other research groups at the department, Karolinska Institutet and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society is also expected. To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have demonstrated excellence in research on mitochondrial biology and inborn errors of metabolism.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism at Centrum för Medfödda Metabola Sjukdomar (CMMS) at Karolinska University hospital Solna and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Clinical Genetics, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge.
