The Division of Infectious Diseases performs research and education in close collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital. The research teams address a wide range of infectious diseases using clinical, epidemiological and experimental approaches.

The Färnert research group focuses on understanding of immunity to malaria with the overall aim to contribute to malaria vaccine development. The group is now seeking an Assistant Professor who will focus on the importance of antigen diversity and immune responses to potential malaria vaccine candidate antigens. Studies are based on well characterized cohorts in malaria endemic areas as well as travellers diagnosed with malaria in Sweden.

The group is based at the new research laboratories at BioClinicum on the Karolinska University Hospital site in Solna.

Your mission

The Assistant Professor will investigate the genetic diversity within specific antigens in relation to antibody and memory B cell responses. The project will include large scale sequencing and genotyping of antigens by PCR, sequencing data analyses, antigen expression and serology and cellular immunology.  The Assistant Professor will be leading the project, ranging from applying for funding, generating own research ideas and laboratory work, data analysis, supervision of students, statistical analysis, and writing scientific publications.

The employment as Assistant Professor is for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Your profile

The candidate must hold a PhD equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree in the field of molecular biology. The applicant should have knowledge and practical experience in different molecular and immunological techniques. It is advantageous if the candidate has expertise in setting up novel methodologies for large scale sequencing, as well as protein expression and purification, immunological assays and previous experience within the field of molecular biology of malaria. Scientific peer reviewed publications is a requirement. Documented grants and supervision of master students is a merit.

The group is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Assistant Professor. The candidate is expected to be organized and able to work independently and take responsibilities in the research group. The project is pursued in an interdisciplinary environment and international collaborations with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are a requirement necessary. Fluency in English is mandatory.  

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
