Karolinska Institutet, Department of Global Public Health

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary institution that aims to advance knowledge on how to improve population health at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to identify the determinants of health, develop and evaluate individual and structural interventions, and provide evidence for guidelines and policy documents. Many of the department's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national and international level. The department has 9 research groups, about 85 research students and about 140 employees.

Sachsska Children and Youth Hospital is part of Södersjukhuset and we offer acute and specialised care to children and young people. The clinic has about 600 employees, of which about 100 are doctors. We are specialists in paediatric and adolescent medicine and pride ourselves on trying to provide the best care for everyone. We are happy to listen to the opinions of our young patients and their parents. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child underpins all our activities.

Description of subject area
Within the field of global child health, research and education are conducted on the causes of child mortality and morbidity, such as infectious diseases, malnutrition, and neonatal diseases. As the determinants of morbidity and mortality are closely linked to the social circumstances of children and the design of health systems, the topic also has a clear link to social medicine and public health.

Child mortality has halved in the last 25 years, but 5 million children still die before their fifth birthday every year. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 have a specific target for child health (target 3.2) and research on this topic shall contribute to reducing child mortality.

Research is essential to identify and implement effective prevention and treatment interventions for children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by, among other things, analysing health systems. There are also many challenges in Sweden in this area and there is much to be learned through knowledge exchange among different contexts.
