Experimental and clinical pediatric endocrinology focusing on skeletal diseases, mineral disorders, various growth problems and related areas.

The position includes research on experimental and clinical pediatric endocrinology focusing on skeletal diseases, mineral disorders, various growth problems and related areas.  The position aims to strengthen and further develop the clinical research in pediatric endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet and Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital at the Karolinska University Hospital and is combined with a clinical position as specialist trained physician at Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital.  The position will include active involvement in the teaching of medical students, nurses and other student categories as well as supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in their research projects.

The position is intended to be divided as 50 % employment as a professor at Karolinska Institutet and 50% as a specialist trained physician at Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital.

Since the position aims to strengthen the collaboration between clinical care and research in pediatric endocrinology, the successful applicant is expected to take active part in further development of clinical research infrastructures within the field, nationally as well as internationally.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise; management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The appointee is expected to perform internationally competitive research in the field of experimental pediatric endocrinology, as documented by the number and quality of publications in international peer-reviewed journals during the last seven years. The applicant must demonstrate current external funding acquired as main applicant in national or international competition during the last five years, and supervision of doctoral students.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at Karolinska University Hospital. Therefore, the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in paediatrics with a sub-speciality in paediatric endocrinology or the equivalent competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must demonstrate proficiency in Swedish at least corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

  • the ability to cooperate as well as international experience and existing research networks.

  • clinical experience, experience from leadership and collaboration and experimental research. The clinical competence should cover the whole field of pediatric endocrinology with specialized knowledge within treatment of skeletal diseases, mineral dysregulation, and various types of growth disorders.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
