Karolinska Institutet, Department of Women's and Children's Health

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

Many children and adolescents suffer from allergies and asthma. It is not fully clarified what governs the risk of developing allergies or asthma, but it is likely multifactorial. There are probably several subgroups of asthma, and different classifications have been suggested over the years. It is important that Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health maintain a high academic standard in this field. In the wake of the reorganisation of the department, and to strengthen and develop successful research within the strong research environment, for example the work on the development of the immune system in children, we wish to recruit a Senior Lecturer of paediatric allergy and asthma genetics.

Description of the subject area

Research within paediatric allergy and asthma genetics. The goal is to increase the molecular knowledge of allergy and asthma through translational and clinical research, and thereby the chances of better treatments and diagnostics for children suffering from these diseases.

Your mission

The holder of the position is expected to conduct molecular allergy and asthma research, both in terms of experimental methods analysing basic mechanisms as well as functional validation of genetic findings and applying these to relevant clinical issues. You are expected to supervise doctoral students and postdocs in different projects. A certain amount of teaching on bachelor, master and doctoral levels is included. Participation in regular activities at KI, such as organising courses, participating in dissertation, and scoring applications, is expected.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise and management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

Strong current research in allergy and asthma genetics, or a related field, is a requirement.

The holder of the position is expected to conduct internationally competitive research in the field of paediatric allergy and asthma genetics, as judged by the number and quality of peer-reviewed international publications. We are looking for a co-worker with documented experience from international collaborations, and who has secured grants as main applicant from national or international funding bodies.

The applicant must have experience from being main supervisor of doctoral students, and from teaching on basic or advanced levels.

The applicant must be fluent in written and spoken English.

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Strong research activity in the field of molecular genetics
  • Knowledge of and experience from populations genetics, e. g. interaction with environmental factors
  • Experience from epigenetics

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Good knowledge of Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
