Our young and dynamic research team is now expanding and we are seeking an ambitious postdoc with prior laboratory experience to work on collaborative projects spanning all the way from advanced cell culture models to in vivo work and clinical samples.
Cells of the tumor microenvironment control tumor growth, metastasis and response to treatment. These aspects of tumor biology are well studied in tumors derived from epithelial cells, but much less described in sarcomas. The sarcoma tumor microenvironment (TME) team headed by Monika Ehnman (Assistant Professor, PhD) focuses on understanding how malignant and non-malignant cells are affected and educated by each other during sarcoma progression. We hope to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic approaches with principally different modes of action compared to the multimodal treatments of today. More information about the team is found here: https://staff.ki.se/people/monehn
The study design is particularly beneficial for a candidate who wish to work with a wide range of methods and how to apply them in the tumor setting. The questions to be addressed are likely relevant in multiple tumor types, which implies that the project is well suited to act as a bridge to further molecular oncology studies for a candidate with the ambition to pursue a translational research career.
The successful candidate will perform explorative studies to map molecular and cellular communication between different cell types in sarcoma. Tumor-suppressive versus tumor-promoting functions of immune cells, mesenchymal stromal cells and blood vessels will be explored at the molecular, cellular and tissue level in vitro and in vivo. Cell culture, histopathology, digital image analysis (QuPath), and bioinformatics will be part of the project. Patient material and cohorts are available through existing national and international collaborations.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
The applicant should have excellent communication skills (fluent in English, written and spoken) and be highly motivated to perform top-quality research in an international research environment where English is the first language. Prior research experiences should be documented as publications in peer-reviewed journals. The research background of the applicant should complement the existing knowledge within the team and its network of colleagues. Own thoughts and ideas will be encouraged to facilitate fruitful discussions and further development of the project as well as the career of the applicant.
Prior “hands-on” knowledge from at least two of the following techniques is essential: Cell culture, flow cytometry, xenograft studies in mouse or zebrafish, multiplexing IHC/IF with digital image quantification, bioinformatics, western blot, qPCR, ELISA. An MD training with histology background is a merit, but not a requirement. A FELASA C certificate is also beneficial. The PhD degree should be maximum three years old (excluding parental leave, military service or similar).
