Karolinska Institutet, Department of Women´s and Children’s Health

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

In the SciLifeLab National Mass cytometry facility the team performs state-of-the art service analyses for academic and industry researchers all over Sweden and internationally. The facility receives samples, mostly from blood, and prepares these using a unique liquid handling robotic platform, stains cells with antibodies and acquire data by mass cytometry.

The facility is looking to hire a lab technician to be responsible for the processing of samples and acquisition of data by Mass cytometry. The work is hands-on in the laboratory and involve sample preparation, antibody coupling to rare-earth metal probes, reagent preparations and running of the liquid handling robotic platform for sample preparation and acquisition of samples by Mass cytometry. This position is full time employment, 40h week.

Your mission

The Mass cytometry facility is affiliated with the Petter Brodin research group which develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the team is to understand human immune system variation in health and disease and the development of immune systems early in life. The group is half experimental and half computational and belongs to the unit of Clinical Pediatrics which is a broad, multi-disciplinary unit at the Department of Women's and Children's Health.

The responsibilities of this candidate in the lab will mainly involve Mass cytometry tasks:

  • Conjugation of antibodies to metal isotopes that are used as probes in mass cytometry.
  • Testing and titrating probes by Mass/Flow cytometry and maintenance of antibody database/inventory.
  • Operating the Mass cytometry instruments by working closely with the Mass cytometry facility head and acquiring samples.
  • Following the routines established in the facility for the maintenance of Mass cytometry instruments.

Other tasks in the lab: clinical sample reception, processing and recording the sample/subject metadata in the database by coordinating with the person responsible, buffer exchange procedures for samples to be prepped for Mass cytometry experimentation and performing any other experimental research lab-related tasks like cell cultures, stimulations of cells and so on.

The technician will be an integral member of the Brodin research lab and will participate in many different ongoing research projects and will be able to learn many cutting edge technologies used in the facility and the research group.

Your profile

The successful candidate should have lab experience particularly with methods like flow cytometry, antibody staining, cell cultures, blood sample handling, reagent/buffer preparation, and experience of method development with iterative testing of protocols and careful documentation. Some experience in record maintenance (with basic computer skills) of clinical samples and reagents will be helpful.

The successful candidate must be thriving in interdisciplinary environments and should be dedicated to performing the tasks assigned in the lab meticulously and with great care. The candidate must be comfortable to work both independently and in collaboration with the facility head and other members of the team (when necessary) and contribute to the team’s concerted efforts. The candidate must have good communication skills in English as the team is multicultural and interdisciplinary.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. Documented experience in some of the aforementioned requirements
  2. Some understanding of cytometry
  3. Prior experience and knowledge in biology
  4. Expressed interest in the job described above

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
