Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education are conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as Region Stockholm.

Ophthalmology is a broad research area from biomedical mechanisms in the eye and brain over surgical interventions of eye disease to visual perception. The purpose of this recruitment is to strengthen the neurobiology aspect of the development in the field with special focus on ocular neurodegeneration. The Department of Clinical Neuroscience with its Division of Eye and Vision has an extensive and very successful line of research in the field of ophthalmology and optometry. The Division of Eye and Vision has a comprehensive assignment in education and is responsible for the ophthalmology training for medical students, optometry students and several other educations such as ophthalmic nurses and orthoptists. The education is performed both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Department now wishes to maintain its scientific and educational position in the field of neurobiology through recruiting a senior lecturer.

Your mission

The successful applicant will conduct research and education (both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level) within different programs at the department with focus on ocular neurodegeneration. The holder shall promote research in the area of ophthalmology through actions in research as well as participating in international cooperation. The candidate is also expected to establish networks and collaborations (basic, translational, and clinical in nature) with other groups at the division, department, at KI, nationally and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society.

The employment has a focus on research. We are looking for an ambitious researcher at the senior lecturer level with enthusiasm towards bettering human health through basic and translatable neurobiology, with a specific focus on ocular neurodegeneration (e.g. glaucoma). The successful applicant will be expected to run a diverse group of basic and translational scientists with an aim to discover neurodegenerative mechanisms and develop neuro-protective/neuro-regenerative strategies for diseases such as glaucoma using technologies such as omics techniques, neurobiological testing, and high-resolution microscopy in animal/tissue/cell models. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with other members in the division, national and international collaborators, contribute significantly to a productive research environment, obtain additional independent funding, supervise students and participate in research education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the person must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The successful candidate must have several years of postdoctoral activity, and be an independent researcher with a strong background in visual neuroscience. The successful candidate will have practical experience with the ability to train others in techniques including practical animal husbandry, molecular biology, neurobiology techniques including omics data generation and analysis, microscopy, ocular surgery, and retinal electrophysiology. The hired applicant will be expected to interact and work in an international environment with multidisciplinary basic research scientists, clinicians, and research clinicians. The successful applicant must have documented experience of translational activities (e.g. collaborations with clinicians, activity in clinical trials).

Bases of assessment

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, and development and collaboration expertise (2).

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
