Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Research team

A postdoctoral position (scholarship) is now open where you will collaborate with Assistant Professor Joana B. Pereira and her team. We offer an interdisciplinary and internationally competitive environment to conduct research in neuroimaging in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. We combine imaging analyses, statistical tools, graph theory, machine learning algorithms, biofluid assays and genetics to study brain aging and the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to develop new skills, analyze large datasets, apply for grants and develop a wide network of collaborations.

Division

The research conducted at the Division of Clinical Geriatricsis focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson's disease. The focus is on research using different imaging methods, registry studies, lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies. We also have research on drugs and the elderly, clinical nutrition, stroke and stroke rehabilitation. Within the division, we also conduct preclinical research. We also have a close collaboration with Theme Ageing and the cognitive units at Karolinska University Hospital. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research and research in the other specialties, such as psychology, occupational therapy and speech therapy etc.

Duties

The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, independent and have good communication skills. He/she will collaborate with other group members, contribute to ongoing projects, supervise students, propose new ideas and be able to complete research projects and write manuscripts of high scientific quality.

The Postdoctoral studies will be performed for 1 year, with possible extension for an additional year.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualities: 1) A PhD in neuroimaging, medicine, computational science, neuropsychology, statistics, physics or a related field; 2) Experience in statistical techniques, programming, and scripting; 3) Experience with structural MRI, DTI, fMRI and/or PET imaging analyses; 4) Clinical or research experience with aging and/or neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases; 5) Excellent academic record with scientific publications in world-class journals.

Location: Flemingsberg

Type of scholarship

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
