The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest clinical departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department is divided into divisions which in turn consist of one or more research groups. The activity consists of research, postgraduate education and undergraduate education for future doctors and biomedicine scientists. The department has three profile areas: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division

The Division of Allergy and Immunology consists of several groups, working in allergy, viral immune responses, vaccinology, gut immunology and lung diseases.

Duties

The candidate will perform original research in immunology with a focus on extracellular vesicles and acquire the required experimental and computational skills necessary for the completion of the project. The work includes development of new immunoassays and interdisciplinary work. It consists of experimental laboratory work, data processing, data analysis, scientific publishing, and report writing

Entry requirements

The applicant should have a PhD in molecular biology, immunology or similar, and work on extracellular vesicles is meritious. The successful candidate will take a strong lead in the experimental design, and collaborate with other team members. The candidate is expected to communicate the scientific results by writing up scientific papers and attending scientific meetings. The ideal candidate is also expected to participate in the general duties of the team and to effectively communicate with scientists of very diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. Working language is English.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of Susanne Gabrielsson, who  works to decipher the role of extracellular vesicles in the immune system, and how to use them for therapy or diagnosis. The group works with clinical patient samples and in disease models in vitro and in vivo to understand the mechanisms of diseases such as cancer, sarcoidosis and COPD.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
