The research group

We search for a Research specialist that together with Professor Birgitta Henriques Normark and her collaborators will work on projects in bacteriology and pneumococcal infections.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies infectious diseases as one of the greatest global health threats. Pneumococci are a major contributor to morbidity and mortality world-wide. They are one of the most common causes of respiratory tract infections such as otitis media and sinusitis as well as of severe diseases such as pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis. However, pneumococci are also common colonizers of the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. It is still not totally clear what determines whether the bacteria will cause a disease or just stay colonizing healthy individuals. The research group focuses on host-microbe interactions with a major interest in pneumococcal infections.

Your mission

This position includes studies of comparative bacterial genomics, transformation, mobile genetic bacterial elements, bacteriophages, RNA sequencing, virulence factors and virulence mechanisms and their interactions with the host using molecular biology techniques with a focus on pneumococci. The position also includes internal administrative and laborative tasks such as taking care of the strain collection, chemicals etc.

Your profile

A PhD in microbiology will give priority. Previous experience in bacteriology and in molecular microbiology is favorable especially previous experience on working with pneumococcal infections and bacteriophages in pneumococci. Documented experience in relevant research areas and extensive experience with in vitro model systems and molecular techniques, especially bacterial genomics, transformation, and studies of mobile genetic elements, RNA sequencing, bacteriophages, is an advantage. Experience with international collaborations, as well as experience in project management are of advantage in addition to social skills and language skills, especially in English and Swedish.

Qualified to be employed as a Research specialist is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Preferably the Research specialist should have experience of postdoctoral research for at least 5 years.
