Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Dental Medicine at Campus Flemingsberg focuses on the education of dentists and dental hygienists. In addition, we perform research, dental specialization training and provide patient care. Karolinska Institutet and the rest of Scandinavia have been world leaders in dentistry for decades.

The Department of Dental Medicine conduct research in three major areas – Infection & Immunology, Clinical Odontology & Diagnostics, and Orofacial Neurosciences. We offer a top international learning and research environment for researchers, students, technical and administrative personnel. In KI´s new ANA Futura laboratory we are creating a leading translational integrated research environment equipped for cutting-edge research. Where the boundaries between departments and clinics are torn down and researchers collaborate on the basis of common research profiles.

Mission

Two postdoc scholarship positions are available in the research group of Prof. Margaret Sällberg Chen at the Division of Oral Diagnostics and Rehabilitation, Section for Oral Diagnostics and Surgery. Presentation

One postdoc position is dedicated for human microbiome studies and the other position is dedicated for immunity studies on emerging pathogens. The positions are suitable for scientists who have strong backgrounds in either 1) human microbiota analysis, or 2) immunological and cellular analysis.

You will be part of a research team in close interactions with clinical members and scientists in medical specialities of cancer, infection, and microbiology. Several clinical translational research projects are ongoing in the group with possibility for the postdoc fellows to identify new characteristics and learn mechanistic insights on new infections.

The work includes to 1) examine the impact of oral microbiota on clinical responses to medical treatments incl. vaccination, and/or 2) investigate experimental models on human microbiota and host cell interaction and metabolism. The team is involved in clinical studies in monitoring of immune and/or microbiome dynamics, interactions between oral microbiota and immune pathological responses in context of disease development.

Position 1: Handling of human tissues and biofluid, microbial RNA/DNA purification, quality controls and quantitative PCR analysis, cultivation of bacteria.  Familiar with workflow and bioinformatics resources used in NGS metagenomic and metabolomics analysis. The project is suitable for a highly motivated researcher, especially one who already has experience with NGS bioinformatics for microbiome analysis.

Position 2: Handling of human blood and biopsies, immune cell phenotyping, single cell functional analysis, cell culture, in situ microscopy staining, labelling of cells and bacteria and imaging analysis. The project is suitable for a highly motivated researcher especially one who already has practical experience with flow cytometry and/or confocal microscopy imaging used in immunology or cancer research.
