The Department of Medicine Huddinge is one of Karolinska Institutet's fastest growing clinical departments. It is home to 6 units that all conduct translational research in the subject areas of infectious medicine, hematology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology and pulmonary medicine. Within the department, approximately 70 research groups work in research, education and doctoral education within our core activities.
The Gastroenterology unit has a clear clinical profile focus on diseases in the gastrointestinal area. The research groups in the unit are to a large extent working on diseases of the liver and conduct clinical therapy research, epidemiology and translational projects in collaboration with experimental research groups. Apart from its scientific mission, the unit is also active in teaching at the undergraduate and doctoral level. Most scientist in the unit have clinical education.
Karolinska Insitutet has a long tradition of world-leading research in the area of liver disease, in which many different research environments collaborate to reach academic height. Both clinically and academically, the activity is strongly profiled at the Flemingsberg campus in Huddinge, with a complete clinical activity including internal medicine but also surgery, transplantation, oncology, infection, immunology, radiology and endoscopy, all with a focus on liver diseases. This clinical cluster is unique and nearly complete and makes up a strong platform for academic activity within research, doctoral training and basic education. One example is “liver academy at KI”, a collaborative platform coordinating activities with the purpose of increasing research collaborations between clinical and experimental research.
By appointing a professor in this area, we intend to strengthen the academic base within internal medicine gastroenterology and secure continuity within the area. With the focus on liver diseases, in combination with a task a specialist physician at the medical unit “övre buk – upper abdominal area”, we will allow research of the highest quality within hepatology in which collaboration with immunology, infection diseases, inflammation and transplantation is secured. We thus look for a person who can unify gastroenterology at KI, develop the subject and take the lead of clinical, translational research within the liver area. Further, it is important to strengthen both basic education and doctoral education within gastroenterology to secure that Karolinska Institutet maintains and develops is international network within the field.
We are looking for person with a strong and upward-pointing research trajectory within hepatology to maintain and develop the bridge between clinical activities and basic science that characterized ongoing activities. You are expected to take on the task as head of the Gastroenterology unit and in this role establish new translational projects and strengthen existing ones. You will create a plan for how research results will become clinical useful and actively participates in education on basic, advanced and doctoral level. The employment as professor will be combined with a clinical employment as specialist physician at medical unit “övre buk – upper abdominal area”, Karolinska University Hospital.
To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise as well as clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
The applicant must show high scientific competence and activity in the area of hepatology, with broad experience of both clinical studies and translational collaborations. Documentation strengthening this competence will include high profile publications and substantial research grants obtained in open national and international competition. Successful supervision of PhD students and postdocs is required, as well as a strong international network.
The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Karolinska University Hospital, and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).
Experience with epidemiological research is a merit because this methodology is of central importance for the development of this field. It is further a strong merit if the applicant can show experience from successful leadership and development work in complex project and established collaborations with preclinical researchers. High potential to develop scientifically and experience in education at basic and advanced level is meriting.
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
