Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

In our research group you will get a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment where we strive to increase the knowledge and understanding about injuries’ social etiology and consequences, in Sweden and globally. We investigate various injury mechanisms and risk factors. We also study how to reduce either the consequences of injuries, through improved health care, or their likelihood to happen at community level e.g., through primary prevention measures. Members of our groups and our close partners are skilled and dedicated researchers and, together with us, you get an opportunity to conduct high quality research.

Your mission

Burn injury diagnostic at point of care is one of our field of interest. We have built up a large image data set from several hospitals and burns centers in South Africa and Sweden. We have also developed a questionnaire on the factors that are susceptible to determine the intention to use automated diagnostic assistance among front line clinicians. In the work ahead, we want to finalize the development of an algorithm for acute burn diagnostic assistance and to survey front line clinical users and medical students from resource high and resource poor settings to assess their intention to use artificial intelligence in their work.

The research coordinator will be responsible for the activities mentioned above and will be assigned the following tasks:

  • conduct and write up of a systematic review of the literature on artificial intelligence for burn injury diagnostic;
  • further analyze the images gathered thus far to optimize the deep-learning algorithm for the preparation of a scientific article;
  • coordinate and conduct our online survey among medical students from different universities in Sweden and in South Africa, and the analysis of the data compiled;
  • develop an interview guide aligned to the questionnaire mentioned above that will target burns specialists, followed by the interview of a sample of burns specialists from Sweden and other countries in Europe and Africa and the write up of a synthesis of those interviews.

Your profile

To be eligible for the position the successful candidate must hold a PhD in a relevant area of research such as medicine or public health, demonstrate experience with different research methods, have a training in deep learning, and be familiar with R as statistical software and coding in Python. It is a requirement to be able to work independently and to demonstrate an ability to cooperate with professionals from different disciplines. Having previous experience of research coordination in different settings, in particular a familiarity to the South African academic and hospital setting is a merit.

In addition, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as social skills and presentation abilities.
