The Department of Medicine Huddinge is one of Karolinska Institutet's fastest growing clinical departments. It is home to 6 units that all conduct translational research in the subject areas of infectious medicine, hematology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology and pulmonary medicine. Within the department, approximately 70 research groups work in research, education and doctoral education within our core activities.

The Centre for Infectious Medicine (CIM), a research centre within the Department of Medicine Huddine focusing on research in clinical infectious medicine. The research groups at CIM have both basic and translational focus, and work mainly in infectious medicine, immunology and microbiology in close collaboration with the corresponding clinical units at Karolinska University Hospital. In addition to their scientific mission, CIM researchers regularly participate in teaching and postgraduate education. Several of the department's researchers also have clinical training.

Field of research 

Karolinska Institutet has a long tradition of world-leading research in immunology and virology, where translational activities are conducted in close collaboration with clinical units at Karolinska University Hospital. The need for well-developed translational cooperation has become very clear during the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Similarly, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of a high level of competence in the areas of immunology and virology, ranging from patient care and clinical laboratories to translational and preclinical research.

Preparedness for future outbreaks is an important aspect that forms the basis of the initiative that the Department of Medicine Huddinge is now taking in collaboration with the medical unit Clinical Microbiology at Karolinska University Hospital, to strengthen the knowledge base in human immunovirology. The goal of the initiative is to recruit a professor of clinical microbiology, with a focus on immunovirology.

Your mission

We are looking for a well-established internationally renowned researcher who can strengthen and develop the department's basic and translational research program in immunovirology at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, as well as contribute to the development of new clinical diagnostics. The applicant is expected to strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate education in this dynamic field and actively work to increase the participation of Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in international research networks in immunovirology and related areas. The position is combined with clinical duty as a specialist in Clinical Microbiology at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise as well as management, development, and collaborative skills and clinical expertise. The applicant must demonstrate high scientific competence and activity in the fields of human immunology and virology, with extensive experience in immunological methodology such as advanced flow cytometry, cell sorting, cell culture, and molecular biology. A strong translational research profile, extensive experience as well as current research based on analyses of patient tissues is a requirement.

The documentation strengthening these competences must include high-profile publications as well as the existence of significant research grants acquired in open national and international competition. Successful supervision of doctoral students and postdocs is a requirement, as well as a strong international network.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in clinical microbiology at the Karolinska University Hospital, and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in clinical microbiology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria 

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Solid experience in single-cell analysis is very meritorious as this technology is considered central to the development of this research field. Furthermore, it is highly meritorious if the applicant can demonstrate experience of successful management and development work in complex projects as well as established collaborations with clinical researchers. A current high potential to develop scientifically is meritorious.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
