In our research group, led by Professor Jan Hillert, you will work with researchers in neuroepidemiology that focus on increasing the understanding of neurological diseases, especially multiple sclerosis (MS), it´s course and consequences, and identifying factors that affect outcomes. We offer an engaging and international research environment where you will have the opportunity to contribute to high quality research at international top level. The group currently consists of about ten people.

Your mission

The purpose of the employment as Assistant Professor is to develop as an independent researcher and acquire the scientific and pedagogical qualifications required for eligibility for appointment as Senior Lecturer. Our goal is to recruit an experienced scientist in the field of neuro-epidemiology, with a focus on multiple sclerosis. The research will largely involve the analysis of population-level linked clinical data with a focus on disease outcomes and etiology. The candidate should be able to develop his / her  own research ideas, write grant applications, and develop collaborations in the field. The candidate will be expected to develop independent and original research programs and apply for competitive funding during the tenure. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the supervision of Master and PhD students in the research group.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

Scientific expertise in epidemiology and/or biostatistics, with a focus on neurological disease, and in particular on multiple sclerosis, will be most important when assessing the applicant who must have demonstrated the capability, as principal applicant, to obtain external financing and have the potential to secure further funding within the area of neuro-epidemiology. Mentorship and leadership qualities are meritorious. The eligible candidate should show a strong potential to achieve the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer within the designated time.

It’s desirable with experience and proficiency in R and SAS; analysis of population-level linked databases; expertise in the study of chronic neurological conditions.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
