Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 75 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

At ARC, and especially in the psychology sector, we work on several small- and large-scale neuroimaging datasets, mostly using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) techniques.

The aims of our projects are to study the normal and pathological aging brain in relation to cognition (e.g., memory) and how genetic and environmental factors (e.g., lifestyle) influence brain integrity. Our datasets have 2 major particularities: (1) they are multimodal, meaning that we measure a variety of structural, molecular, and functional neural parameters; and (2) they contain MRI sequences that are rarely used in regular protocols, e.g. 3D multiecho gradient recalled echo for brain iron and spectroscopy for quantification of metabolites.

Accordingly, we have a strong interest in developing multimodal methods and assessing neural variables that became accessible with novel advances in the medical imaging field, by developing optimal processing of such neuroimaging data. ARC possesses several servers to store large loads of neuroimaging data and process heavy computations.

Your mission

The duties for the incumbent are to:

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of analytical methods and tools for neuroimaging data.
  • Work productively and collaboratively with other group members in order to provide methodological and technical support for neuroimaging data.

Your profile

The compulsory qualifications required for the research engineer position include:

  • A civil engineer degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a Master of Science in engineering, preferably in the fields of "medical engineering" or “electrical engineering”
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, Matlab and other languages (e.g., C/C++, JAVA)
  • Previous experience of working with neuroimaging data, especially MRI
  • Fluent spoken and written English

In addition, priority will be given to the applicants with the following merits:

  • Experience in brain iron and multimodal neuroimaging analyses
  • Knowledge in machine learning and brain anatomy
  • Publications in the field of neuroimaging

Finally, the duties imply that the candidate is innovative, flexible, likes social interactions within a team and enjoys learning.
