Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The Department of Oncology-Pathology conducts basic, translational, and clinical research together with educational activities related to cancer. The position is placed within the research team of Assistant Professor Sean Rudd and will investigate cancer cell metabolism and its relationship to cancer biology and chemoresistance

Your Mission

The research team of Assistant Professor Sean Rudd is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher. Dr Rudd’s team conducts multidisciplinary research with the goal of improving treatment outcome for cancer patients. This newly started research group, housed within the well-established laboratory of Professor Thomas Helleday, has obtained generous funding  from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society, the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation, and Karolinska Institutet, which should secure its activities in the future. Dr Rudd’s team is placed within SciLifeLab, a national centre for molecular biosciences containing state-of-the-art high-throughput technology platforms together with world-leading research labs focused upon cancer biology, chemical biology, and precision medicine, amongst other topics.

Project description

The project is centred upon investigating metabolic pathways inside cancer cells, with a particular focus upon genome stability and nucleotide pool metabolism, and the relationship of these pathways to cancer biology and chemoresistance. The successful candidate will employ an array of biochemical, molecular and cell biology-focused approaches, together with cross-disciplinary collaborations, to fulfil the translational research goals of this project, which is to ultimately improve cancer treatment.

Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and independent postdoctoral researcher with a solid background in molecular biology. Given the translational ambitions of this project, clinical experience would be a significant merit.

Other requirements of the position include:

  • Keen interest in translational cancer research
  • Well-versed with standard molecular and cell biology techniques (cell culture, PCR technique, Elisa, Western blot, flow cytometry, immunostaining, siRNA transfection)
  • Effective communication skills – written and oral. Fluency in English.

Desired skills:

  • Experience in clinical work in medical oncology, especially with lung cancer patients’ treatments including radiation oncology, would be a very strong merit.
  • Experience with isotype labelling technique
  • Experience with microplate-based assays and liquid handling equipment
  • Previous research experience in dNTP metabolism would be a strong merit.
  • Previous research experience in drug resistance would be a strong merit.

This employment is for one year.
