The Department of Clinical Science and Education Södersjukhuset, pursues undergraduate education, doctoral education and internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and injuries. The goal of all activities is to improve human health. The department has about 50 employees, 80 graduate students, 140 affiliated researchers and a turnover of 70 million. The department is divided into education and research groups (a total of approximately 15 research groups). Pediatrics is part of clinical medicine – focus on reproduction and development within the medical program and has 5 research groups as well. Within Pediatrics, medical students as well as nurses are educated, foremost through integrated learning (VIL). The research groups in pediatrics have a long tradition of clinical research, especially in asthma and allergy, diabetes and gastroenterology, and consists of 2 Professors (Pediatrics and Care Sciences), 2 Senior Lecturers (one Adjunct Senior Lecturer), 6 docents, 20 PhDs and 19 PhD students.

Your mission

The employment as Senior Lecturer and specialist in Pediatrics involves an overall responsibility for courses within the medical program at KI SÖS as well as developing research regarding common diseases within Pediatrics, within the department as well as in collaboration with other departments within KI. The employment will include responsibility for the course in Pediatrics within the medical program and other teaching activities may also be included. An important part of the work will be to develop an academical leadership within pedagogy and research within the field of Pediatrics.

The Senior Lectureship will be combined with clinical duty as specialist trained physician at Sachsska Children's hospital, Södersjukhuset, where clinical experience and knowledge is of great importance to be able to organize the clinical education and research in the best way possible. The employment involves 30% clinical work and 70% teaching and research.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the person must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher.

The applicant must have experience of clinical education within medical programs, clinical work and supervision on different levels.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in Pediatrics at Södersjukhuset and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Pediatrics, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills Södersjukhuset’s requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

Bases of assessment

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Documented experience of having obtained research funding is meriting.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
