The Department of Clinical Science and Education Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS) has a long tradition of clinical research in common diseases, especially in atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and heart failure. The Cardiology Unit is one of the most research-active clinics at Södersjukhuset, which not only conducts traditional acute and elective cardiac care but also intensive medical care. Currently, the department of Cardiology consists of one professor, one senior lecturer, two docents, 10 PhDs and 10 PhD students. In the medical intensive care unit, cardiac patients as well as other patient groups are treated. The research in medical intensive care at Södersjukhuset focuses on cardiac arrest, which is also a profile area within KI that supports research through Center for Resuscitation science research.

Your mission

The employment as Professor and specialist in Cardiology involves an overall responsibility for research within intensive care of cardiac patients at KI SÖS. The employment includes actively stimulating the ongoing research regarding resuscitation science. Furthermore, the employee is expected to contribute to education of medical intensive care within the medical program, by being responsible for elements or student-chosen course. An important part of the work will be to develop an academical leadership within cardiological research and education within the Cardiology Unit.  

The Professorship will be combined with clinical duty as specialist trained physician at the Cardiology Unit at Södersjukhuset, where clinical experience and knowledge is of great importance to be able to organize the clinical education and research in the best way possible. The employment involves 50% clinical work and 50% teaching and research.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have experience of clinical education within medical programs, clinical work and supervision on different levels.

The applicant must demonstrate documented experience of having obtained research funding.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at the Cardiology Units intensive care, Södersjukhuset and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Cardiology or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills Södersjukhuset’s requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Since the employment involves an overall responsibility for research within intensive care of cardiac patients at KI SÖS, documented experience of research within this field or resuscitation science is meriting.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
