The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) is engaged in research and education in the fields of infection biology, cancer biology, cell biology and immunology. The field of infection biology includes studies of molecular virology, host responses to infection and mechanisms by which viruses counteract host immune responses. MTC have identified these as important areas of investigation to complement current research at the Department.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on education and research. The department seeks to recruit a person with a well-documented and internationally recognized research profile and with strong teaching qualifications within the field of molecular virology. Applicants should have a solid track record as a basic research investigator in the fields of virology, molecular biology, cell biology and virus-host cell interactions. The appointed person is also expected to take on responsibilities for course organization, research schools and to be active as a lecturer and seminar leader in these subject areas. The professor in molecular virology will divide his/her time between research (up to 70%) in the research area(s) described above, education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and departmental management board (30-50%).

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

For this employment the following eligibility requirements must be fulfilled:

  • A PhD within a relevant research area.

  • Documented research achievements in the area of molecular virology and ongoing research activity of high international standards.

  • Extensive experience in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, both as a teacher and as a course organizer.

  • Experience of supervising multiple graduate students throughout their training all the way to a completed PhD degree.

  • Since teaching is mainly conducted in Swedish, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (3) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

Experience with developing the content of courses within the field of virology at the undergraduate level is especially meritorious.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
