Karolinska Institutet, the Department of Medicine, Huddinge

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Dept. of Medicine Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden
We are looking for one highly motivated and talented research engineer to support research projects in the lab of Professor Sten Eirik Jacobsen (https://ki.se/en/medh/sten-eirik-w-jacobsen-lab-hematopoietic-stem-cell-biology-group) and Assistant Professor Petter S. Woll (https://ki.se/en/medh/petter-woll-group). The position and corresponding research project is focused on regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis and hematopoietic stem cell biology, and will be funded by existing grants. The position is initially available for a 2-year period with possible extension.

About the research labs
The Jacobsen and Woll labs comprises an international collaborative team focused on understanding at the single cell level the cellular and molecular pathways governing the earliest fate decisions in normal hematopoiesis (Luc et al, Nat Immuol 2012; Boiers et al, Cell Stem Cell 2013; Sanjuan-Pla et al, Nature 2013: Carrelha et al, Nature 2017) and how these are dysregulated in hematologic malignancies (Tehranchi et al, New Engl J Med, 2010; Giustacchini et al, Nature Medicine 2017; Woll et al, Cancer Cell, 2014, Booth et al, Cancer Cell 2018). This is studied in mouse models, as well as in relevant patients. Key technologies applied towards these research questions include high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing including single cell analysis, genetic fate-mapping using next-generation-sequencing technology, flow cytometry, mouse genetics and various in vitro and in vivo stem cell assays.

Job description
The work will be conducted under the joint supervision of Professor Sten Eirik Jacobsen and Assistant Professor Woll. The position is focused on supporting studies aimed at unraveling normal cellular and molecular pathways governing lineage commitment from hematopoietic stem cells and malignant transformation. Projects will be pursued in part at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM; http://ki.se/en/medh/herm), and in part at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB; http://ki.se/en/cmb/startpage). The Jacobsen and Woll labs also have close interactions with other world leading research groups, and the recruited candidates will benefit from interactions in this highly collaborative network.

All projects largely utilize mouse models of normal and malignant hematopoiesis but also require access to relevant patient material. The position will be directed towards supporting investigators with their experiments. In addition to the entry requirements, the candidate will be responsible for organizing common lab resources, such as equipment, reagents and lab infrastructure.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in biology
  • Documented experience in experimental application of molecular and cellular biology techniques to the study of hematopoiesis
  • Experience in documentation and storage of research data
  • Previous experience as a lab manager
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong language skills, including ability to speak and write English fluently

Desired

  • Ability to perform and analyze advanced flow cytometry
  • Experience with overseeing large mouse colonies, as well as handling and procedures on mice
  • Hands-on experience with preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries
  • Strong organizational skills to plan experimental bench-work
  • Experience with administrative systems for tracking and charging lab orders
  • Emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as responsibility, flexibility, teamwork and ability to solve problems

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae
  2. A personal letter, including motivation for the position
  3. Names and contact details of two references that are familiar with the applicants recent research and training

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

Location: Solna and Flemingsberg
