Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

You are welcomed to join a young, dynamic research group working translationally to understand how human white adipose tissue impacts the emergence of cardiovascular disease. As a part of a well-established larger network of researchers in metabolism, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular inflammation we focus on identifying early disease mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets, taking discoveries from human cell systems to in vivo work in rodent disease models.

Division

A postdoc position for a highly motivated scientist is open within the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at the Department of Medicine Solna, one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The Department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases. The Cardiovascular Medicine labs are located in the brand-new research building BioClinicum in Solna, with close proximity to both the clinics at the Karolinska Hospital and the research resources of Karolinska Institutet.

Duties

The postdoctoral project is focused on adipose tissue as a regulator of circulating cholesterol levels and if alleviating adipose dysfunction can protect against the development of cardiovascular diseases. Studies are performed using human fat tissue biopsies, state-of-the-art culture models as well as mouse models of obesity and hyperlipidaemia. The project will also involve analysis of human data from biopsies or biobanks. Particular focus will be on the interaction between adipose tissue and the vasculature, as well as on the lipid handling dynamics of these cell types.

The appointment will be for two years with a possible extension for up to two additional years.

Entry requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and hard-working researcher with a PhD in a relevant discipline and a strong research background in experimental cellular/molecular research including, but not limited to metabolic, cardiovascular or vascular biology, preferentially documented with several research publications. Applicants should have solid experience from in vivo animal research and be able to independently or together with colleagues plan, perform, analyse and document animal experiments as well as maintain animal colonies. Cell culture experience is also a plus. Scientific expertise and an ambitious, pro-active and problem-solving attitude are highly valued. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are a must, as is the ability to work in a team.

The successful candidate will be offered a full scholarship for postdoctoral training intended to promote internationalisation of both the candidate and university.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

We offer a creative and inspiring scientific environment at a top modern, world-renowned medical university in Sweden, Karolinska Institutet. The study is headed by Assistant Professor Carolina Hagberg (www.Hagberglab.com) and Professor Rachel Fisher in a team consisting of 4-5 people, working as an integrated part of the larger Cardiovascular Medicine division that comprises around 55 persons active both in basic and clinical research. The successful applicant will thus work with many energetic, international colleagues, as well as participating in two larger cardio-metabolic research networks within Karolinska Institutet that organize yearly conferences and host world-class international speakers. The candidate will receive top class research training and personal mentoring. The Karolinska Institutet has a nice green campus area with gym, cafeterias and several lunch options, as well as infrastructure for courses and career development for postdoctoral researchers.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications published or under preparation
  • A brief motivation letter explaining your interest in the position and outlining your current work and the background experience that makes you suitable for the position (no more than one page). Indicate a potential starting date.
  • Names and contacts of three references

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
