Your mission

The position is focused on education and research. This position is part of a central strategic initiative to improve the conditions for a strong, close and mutually enriching integration of education and research at different levels. The appointee is expected to take responsibility for leading the development of educational activities to ensure a research integrated education of high quality.

The professorship of medical education is formally placed at the Unit for Teaching and Learning, and the holder’s task will be to facilitate a university-wide development of education. The research is conducted at an appropriate department which is determined during the recruitment process.

The position can be combined with clinical service in the Stockholm region.

We are looking for a professor who will be an academic leader for the development and quality assurance of the Teaching and Learning Unit’s assignments and activities and who will conduct their own medical pedagogical research.

The Unit for Teaching and Learning is the Karolinska Institute’s educational development unit and has the overall responsibility for the pedagogical development of our educational activities. The Unit is aimed at teachers, supervisors and educational leaders at KI's courses on campus and on-site-learning within the health care system in the Stockholm region. The activities include pedagogical development of education across different levels, including undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher.

The applicant must hold a doctorate degree and have extensive and considerable experience as well as have shown great skills in carrying out pedagogical development and research projects within the medical educational area. In addition, the applicant must have extensive knowledge of the medical context, regarding both the university’s curricular activities and the regional health care context. The applicant should also have a broad, substantial and extensive experience of teaching and development of teaching/education of high quality that is based on the latest research, and  in different ways develop students' learning at different educational levels. The applicant must also have great experience of collaboration and great administrative experience, such as participation in a management team, committee work and experience in educational management and development assignments.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, such as having very good co-operative skills and having the ability to easily establish new contacts. The applicant should also be independent and be able to take responsibility for as well as drive processes forward on their own. The applicant sees opportunities and should also plan, organize and prioritize work in an effective way and show good judgment in their statements, actions and decision making.. When communicating the applicant can readily adapt to different situations and invite to dialogue among various parties. The applicant can easily see the whole picture and is committed to contributing to the development of others

When assessing the educational expertise particularly great consideration will be given to the experience of and skills in planning, conducting and evaluating teaching, supervision and examination at the undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate education levels. When assessing the research expertise , particular emphasis will be placed on research quality as well as experience in obtaining research grants in national and international competition.

It is on the basis of an overall assessment of the applicants' qualifications and skills that Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the applicants that have the potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at Karolinska Institutet.
