Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The successful candidates will work in Assoc. Prof. Maja Jagodic’s research group, physically located at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM). The group is a part of the Karolinska Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis (KNIMS) center which gathers around 50 researchers working on different aspects of the pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), including genetics, epidemiology, immunology and epigenetics, with excellent clinical cohorts and experimental models. The group studies epigenetic mechanisms underlying neuroinflammation and neuronal loss in MS using both largescale omics approaches and molecular in vivo and in vitro functional experiments.

We are looking for two postdoctoral researchers who share our passion for translational epigenetics, are ready to join our very collaborative team, and are highly motivated to perform both computational and molecular work. The positions are funded through the European Research Council (ERC-CoG) and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation grants.

Your mission

MS is an immune-mediated disease triggered by complex interactions between genetic and environmental risk factors resulting in a highly heterogeneous disease with respect to its clinical presentation and treatment response. We are looking for postdoctoral researchers who will develop and implement molecular and analytical/bioinformatics approaches to study molecular mechanisms underlying disease susceptibility and progression, focusing on multi-omics level down to single-cell analysis. The work will include design of experiments and analysis, data processing, quality control, statistical analysis, data interpretation and presentation of findings in the form of scientific publications, grant applications and at meetings and conferences. The candidates are expected to interact with many collaborators at KI and externally and to contribute to the efficient functioning of the unit.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Absolute Requirements

  • Documented knowledge of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases
  • Documented research experience of complex e.g. multi-omics data analysis
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular biology, in particular DNA methylation and RNA analysis
  • Experience and competence in scientific computing including skills in at least one language (preferably R language)
  • Experience and competence in NGS/array technologies
  • Documented knowledge of statistics
  • Familiarity with the FAIR principle (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable)
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English

Preferred Requirements

The candidates should also have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently but also as a part of a large team. In addition, good communication skills are desirable. Experience with writing scientific papers and experience with writing grant applications is a merit. Experience with single-cell, or other types of low input, genomics methods and analysis is an advantage.
