The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics is focused on translational research in neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer disease. The labs of Helena Karlström and Per Nilsson focus on Small vessel disease/CADASIL and Alzheimer’s disease. In a fruitful collaboration we investigate the relationship of impaired vascular function and brain diseases.
Both Alzheimer’s disease and CADASIL are characterized by impairment of the vasculature and changes in the blood vessel composition. The pathological changes are anticipated to contribute to disease development and potentially also oppositely be affected by the pathologies present in the diseased brains. The candidate will work in a collaborative effort to delineate the role of the vasculature in the development of Alzheimer disease and CADASIL using state-of-the-art CADASIL and Alzheimer mouse models. The candidate will work within a larger team comprising both preclinical and clinical researchers which together with bioinformaticians will perform single cell RNA sequencing of the vascular cell populations in human diseased brains and animal models. These scRNA data, including comparison of human and animal data, will form the basis for the follow up characterization of the vasculature in CADASIL and Alzheimer mouse models, using a battery of techniques such as immunostaining of microvasculature, RNA scope and different protein analysis methods.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
The applicant needs to have good communicative capabilities since the work is collaborative with the base in Karlström Nilsson labs. Good ability to speak and write English is also a requirement. A strong scientific drive is expected, documented with a publication record. The successful applicant should have extensive experiences and practical skills from research animal work, cell-and molecular biology techniques such as RNA scope, immunohistochemistry and regular protein analysis methods. Previous research experience from neurodegenerative diseases/neuroscience is a merit.
