Your mission

A successful candidate is expected to develop internationally competitive research approaches to the understanding the mechanisms of radiotherapy-induced cognitive impairment to develop novel therapies aimed at preserving cognition in cancer survivors. She or he will be responsible for supervising junior members of the research team (master students, PhD students, and post-docs). The candidate is also expected to be actively applying for competitive research funding, drafting manuscripts, and establishing collaborations both nationally and world-wide.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment

For Assistant Professor with focus on research:

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

 

The candidate should:

  • Hold a PhD degree, or equivalent scientific competence, in regenerative neuroscience awarded no more than five years prior the date of the application deadline.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in the field neuroinflammation and neural stem cells, with particular focus on the microglial and neural stem cell responses to brain injury and malignancies, as demonstrated by publication records.
  • Be skilled in various laboratory techniques including: Basic molecular biology, acute cell isolation from the brain and processing for RNA-sequencing, in vitro cultures of microglia and neural stem cells, experience in handling of laboratory animals, and experience in working with ionizing radiation are essential requirements.
  • Demonstrate a record in supervision of under/post-graduate students for degree projects.
  • Ambition and enthusiasm develop to full professor.
  • Collaborative and communication skills and adaptation to work in multi-cultural research environment.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
