Postdoctoral Researcher in pain research with a focus on innovative drug delivery

Division

The overall research mission of the unit for molecular pain research led by Prof. Camilla Svensson is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms that drive chronic pain states and identify targets for pain relief. In this context, we are exploring how the immune system in the periphery and glial cells in the spinal cord affect the sensory nervous system and contribute to the regulation of pain signal transmission. We are also engaged in studies aimed at utilizing state-of-the art technology for drug delivery. We use a number of behavioral, immunohistochemical, electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques to dissect pain pathways, and how they can be controlled, using in vivo and in vitro systems. The research group (12 PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and staff members) collaborate with preclinical as well as clinical researchers not only within Karolinska Institutet, but also with other Swedish and international researchers.

Your mission

The successful applicant will join an ongoing cross-disciplinary collaboration with the laboratory of organic electronics at Linköping University aimed at developing new technology for drug delivery to patients with chronic pain. The specific part of the project that will be carried forward by the post doc will be centered on in vitro work utilizing primary neuronal cell cultures and calcium imaging as well as in vivo work with behavioral studies and tissue analysis utilizing disease-related animal models of persistent pain. Both conventional and explorative drugs will be part of the studies. The duties will provide opportunities to teach and supervise master and PhD student. The project requires close interaction with engineers and pre-clinical and clinical pain researchers as well as the industry, which makes this an exciting multidisciplinary translational project with opportunities for development of scientific independence.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The applicant must be ambitious and demonstrate a strong interest in chronic pain and innovation and have an appropriate background to develop the proposed research area. To qualify, the candidate must have expertise in microscopy, calcium imaging and establishment of primary cell cultures. Experience with assessment of animal behavior and animal surgery is considered a strong merit. The candidate is expected to take part in all aspects of experimental planning and analysis of data generated in vivo and in vitro, as well as preparation and presentation and publications.

We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team player to our group. You will be part of a team of various experts, so we are looking for individuals who excel at working independently and, at the same time have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multidisciplinary team. Personal suitability and scientific expertise are highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.
