Your mission

This position is part of a central strategic initiative to improve the conditions for a strong, close and mutually enriching integration of education and research at different levels. The appointee is expected to take responsibility for leading the development of educational activities to ensure a research integrated education of high quality.

The employment has a focus on education and research. The position entails an overall responsibility for the education in pathology at the Department of Oncology-Pathology, where the holder is expected to play a central role in integrating the dynamic development of pathology in teaching regarding both content and learning outcomes. The position involves course responsibility / being course director for the teaching of pathology within the Medical Program and the Optician Program. This includes e.g. development of content and learning objectives in courses, development of learning activities, and commitment to the development and research connection of the teachers. The holder is also expected to exercise academic leadership through overall organization and development of education at the basic and graduate level as well as executive and professional education in pathology. The proprietor is expected to be responsible for education within the R&D group at site Solna within Medical Unit Clinical Pathology and Cytology.

Applicants are also expected to provide academic leadership in experimental and clinically oriented research in pathology. Applicants should thus act as principal investigator (PI) and conduct high-quality research in the subject area, as well as supervise doctoral students or PhD students, junior researchers as well as younger employees in clinical pathology.

For the clinical position, the proprietor is expected to actively participate in and develop clinical diagnostics for at least one of the subject areas of clinical pathology conducted at the Solna site.

The position is located at the Department of Oncology-Pathology, Karolinska Institutet, at 50% of full- time (of which 30% includes  course responsibility / being course director and 20% research) and employment at Medical Unit Clinical Pathology and Cytology at Karolinska University Hospital-Solna at 50% of full-time (of which 20% is education and 30% clinical diagnostic work).

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise. The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. 

Educational qualifications are of great importance. The applicant must have experience in clinical and theoretical education in pathology in medical programs, and of supervision at various levels. Applicants must also have experience from having course responsibility / being course director. 

The applicants’ research should be recognized, active and of good quality within Pathology. 

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in Pathology at a healthcare facility for medical training and research and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Pathology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. In order to be employed, applicants must hold a Swedish specialist certificate in Pathology and possess the necessary knowledge of written and spoken Swedish.

Applicants must be a clinically active physician with good knowledge of clinical pathology, and well experienced in clinical routine work such as macro and microscopic diagnostics, participation in clinical conferences and teaching of junior colleagues in the clinic.

Bases of assessment 

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

Experience regarding responsibility for courses, web-based pedagogics and examination is a merit, as well as a clear vision of how he/she sees the development of clinical pathology education over the next five-ten years.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
