The Department of Laboratory Medicine is tightly connected with clinical researchers and healthcare teams at several departments of the Karolinska University Hospital, which allows for translational research involving clinical material and the potential to bring new therapies from bench to bedside. The facilities at Laboratory Medicine offer state-of-the art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry and microscopy facilities. The vision of the Department is to conduct research to promote human health.

This research often leads to new diagnostic methods, clinical practices or to new treatments.

Volkan Özenci's research team
Our research group focuses on developing and evaluating diagnostic methods in clinical microbiology. We have previously developed a rapid diagnostic method for rapid identification of microorganisms from positive blood culture bottles. According to a new survey, the method is used in 40% of university laboratories in Europe. We have participated and been the PI of major clinical studies in clinical microbiology.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who will design and conduct projects on validation and verification of diagnostic methods including ex-vivo and in-vitro studies and with the development of diagnostic methods in clinical microbiology as well as collection of clinical strains for studies.

Project duties
We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the group of Volkan Özenci as a Postdoctoral fellow to work on microbiological diagnostics of severe infectious diseases such as sepsis, clinical verification of methods, direct identification and susceptibility testing of microorganisms from positive blood culture bottles. Fungi-bacteria and microorganism-immune response interactions will be another research topic of research for this position. Furthermore, method development, quality assurance and processing and analysis of research data are included in project duties. The position is full-time employment of about one year, with the possibility of extension.

Qualifications
The candidate shall have a doctoral degree in immunology or microbiology, and have experience working in research in the following areas 1) resistance determination of microorganisms directly from blood culture vials with automated methods; 2) rapid diagnostic methods for diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infections; 3) identification of microorganisms that cause polymicrobial sepsis; 4) fungal immunology. The candidate should be fluent in English speech and writing.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
