Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students. Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

Research group

Our research group (https://ki.se/en/neuro/kilteni-laboratory) uses psychophysical and neuroimaging methods to study human motor control and more particularly sensory predictions during voluntary movements. Our aim is to understand how the brain uses motor information to predict self-generated sensations and distinguish them from externally generated sensations. To address this issue, we use psychophysics, task-based and resting state functional magnetic resonance (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), as well as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) on healthy human subjects. Given recent suggestions that sensory prediction mechanisms are disturbed in patients with schizophrenia, we are particularly interested in the relationship between predictions and schizotypy personality traits in healthy subjects.

Our laboratory has access to a state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI scanner at the Karolinska Institutet MR center, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in collaboration with another research group at the Neuroscience Department. Behavioral setups to study force and touch perception are available.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly talented, self-motivated, innovative and enthusiastic researcher with a PhD in cognitive neuroscience or in a related discipline, to work on projects involving the perception of self-generated touch using some of the above-mentioned methods. The candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the research program of our lab (https://ki.se/en/neuro/kilteni-laboratory) but also actively contribute with his and her proposals.

Your profile

The ideal candidate will have expertise in experimental psychology and psychophysics, fMRI and/or TMS and/or EEG and should be able to work independently and in collaboration. Skills in computational neuroscience will be highly appreciated. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a consistently excellent academic record, including publications in international journals.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
