Purpose
Karolinska Institutet (KI) launches an investment programme for leading junior researchers with particularly outstanding scientific merits and future potential in Medical science (Medicine, Health care and Health). To give the most prominent younger researchers at Karolinska Institutet the opportunity to consolidate their research and broaden their activities, up to eight consolidator grants are announced. Each grant will cover five years' funding for researchers employed at Karolinska Institutet whose doctoral degree is not more than twelve years old.

Eligibility
At the time of application, the applicant must be employed at KI with at least 50 percent employment.

The applicant should not hold a position as Senior lecturer/adjunct Senior lecturer or Professor/adjunct Professor at the application deadline.

A doctorate or equivalent scientific competence should have been obtained on 1 January 2008 or later.

Applicants must conduct internationally leading research within their subject area. Applicants must have their own research line and have demonstrated the ability to conduct research of very high quality, as well as demonstrate future development opportunities with continued high qualitative research and the ability to attract external funding.

Applicants who have received a PhD degree earlier than 2008 may be eligible if there are special grounds for deducting time.

Special grounds refer to

  • parental leave
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces,
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship
  • further training/specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals

Reason, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant certificates.

Persons that previously has been awarded with funding for positions as researcher (5 years) or Consolidator grant through calls by the Board of research (until 2018) or Faculty board (2019) at Karolinska Institutet will not be considered eligible for the announced call for Consolidator grant during 2020.

What does the funding entail?
The Consolidator grant should be applied for by individual researchers and the amount is up to 1.2 million SEK per year for up to five years. The time for disposal is six years.

As a minimum, 50 percent of the grant per year shall be used for salary and wage costs related to the employment at Karolinska Institutet. Up to 50 percent of the grant may be used for research-related costs per year. Researchers who receive a Consolidator grant are expected to conduct research in a subject area within medical science and act as a research group leader at Karolinska Institutet.

The Consolidator grant will be issued corresponding to the extent of the employment at Karolinska Institutet. The grant will end in case the employment at Karolinska Institutet ends.

Assessment criteria
The applicant should be well-published in internationally leading journals in his/her field in recent years, and occupy a prominent place in the list of authors, preferably as senior author. Applicants must have a prominent place in the international research community. Examples of this may have been invited speakers at scientific conferences, have examined the work of others for scientific journals and research financiers, have participated in grading committees and have supervised students and doctoral students.

Applicants must also, as the main applicant, have received major external grants over the past years and should show good promise to obtain additional funding.

Assessment process
Assessment of the applicants will be made on the basis of scientific skills based on two assessment criteria: Applicants' competence and the Scientific quality of the research plan.

The selection includes prioritization of applications by a KI internal panel, external expert assessment of about 30-40 prioritized applications and interviews with the applicants who are ranked highest by the external experts.

The decision on who will be offered Consolidator grants will be based on external expert assessment and interviews.

Application procedure
Applications should be submitted by the recruitment system Varbi no later than May 7, 2020.

  • Certificate from the Head of the recipient department at Karolinska Institutet which shows that the applicant may conduct research at the department (e-mail will be accepted).
