The employment has a focus on research and is situated at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Division of Transplantation surgery, KI South Flemingsberg.
The successful applicant will be the academic leader in preclinical and clinical transplantation research. The task is to lead the research unit towards future new and innovative strategies in both organ-and cell transplantation and too act as principal investigator (PI) within the field. Research includes supervision of PhD students, postdocs and young scientists as well as basic teaching in medical education. Clinically the applicant is expected to be active and propel development in organ- and cell-transplantation. Currently organ protective techniques such as machine-perfusion of donated organs in order to optimize later function and tolerance induction to minimize or even replace the need for life-long pharmacological immunosuppression are areas of importance. Innovative management in the field of transplantation is encouraged.
To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
The position will be combined with a position as specialist trained physician in surgery with a profile for transplantation surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in surgery with a profile for transplantation surgery, or corresponding competence.
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).
Experience of international collaborations is meritorious. The applicant should also be or aim to be clinically active and participate in the daily activities within the medical area of transplantation. Applicants need to be highly proficient in spoken and written English. Swedish language is necessary for the clinical employment.
The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
The applicant should possess, or is expected to possess Swedish licence to practice medicine or being willing to obtain such licence by application to the Swedish National Board of Welfare. Moreover the applicant should have Swedish or foreign certificate of specialist expertise in Surgery. To be able to work as a specialist in Sweden you need to have a Swedish license to practice medicine and certificate of specialist expertise in surgery.
