To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
We are seeking a highly motivated person, with a background in cellular and molecular biology, to join the group of Professor Bertrand Joseph as a PhD student. We are located at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) on Solna campus and are interested in the molecular signaling which regulates the decision between life and death at the cellular level and how its deregulation is implicated in human diseases. One of our research aim is to decipher the transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of microglia tumor promoting phenotype, especially in glioma.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
We are studying the role of microglia, the immune cells of the brain, in the progression of brain tumors like glioma. We have uncovered in the lab few actors involved in the acquisition of the tumor-supportive phenotype of microglia but would like to have a better understanding in the communication between the two cell types. The goal of the project is to understand how the cell-cell communication control microglia/glioma phenotypes and see if they can be exploited for anti-cancer therapy.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and socially skilled candidate that enjoys working in a collaborative environment. The candidate should be able to work independently and have knowledge in how to ask and interpret scientific questions and to critically review the results. Since the applicant will work in a highly international environment good communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English are essential. It is important to highlight that this project will be developed in collaboration with a research group in France meaning that the recruited PhD student will work several months in this other laboratory.

The successful candidate will take part in all research-related activities such as group meetings, departmental seminars, national/international meetings, as well as standard laboratory routines of the group. Finally, the PhD student will work to achieve the course requirements of the PhD program as outlined in the relevant rules and documentation available at the ki.se website.
Previous experiences for the student in cell culture, microscopy and animal work will be considered as an advantage.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
