The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The research at the Unit of Epidemiology, IMM, KI, is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency. The research is based on large register based cohorts, as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples. The division is divided into four research groups of which “The Ageing Population” led by Associate Professor Karin Modig is one. The research focus is the health of the ageing population. Questions such as “what is driving the increase in life expectancy”, “how has the health among the old developed in line with the longer lives”, and “what can be expected in the future” are central.

Your mission

The postdoc is expected to conduct epidemiologic research within ageing epidemiology and in the intersection of epidemiology and demography. During the first two years of the postdoc period, the candidate will be performing research oriented towards biomarkers for old age. There is, however, some room for the candidate to influence the project and to adjust according to his/her own profile. The postdoc is furthermore expected to take part in supervision of master- and PhD students, and in teaching epidemiological theory and methods both at the Master level and in the Doctoral program in Epidemiology.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Bases of assessment

We look for a motivated person who wishes to be part of a small but productive research group. We stress scientific expertise, experience with epidemiological methods and research as well as competence within ageing epidemiology, pharmacology and/or biomarkers when assessing applicants. We see that the candidate has the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in medical science in the area of public health or epidemiology
  • Experience with writing and publishing scientific papers
  • Experience in ageing epidemiology
  • Knowledge of, or experience from, pharmacology
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, biomarkers related to ageing or age-related diseases
  • Experience in handling large databases, including health data registers and population registers
  • Strong writing skills
  • Statistical competence and experience of analyzing epidemiological data
  • Excellent English language skills, written and oral
  • Competence in statistical software SAS, Stata and/or R

The applicant will need to feel comfortable with working in teams and demonstrate good interpersonal skills but also be independent enough to formulate new hypotheses.
