The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases, at the Department of Medicine Solna conducts clinical and experimental research as well as education close to the clinical Department of Infectious Diseases, Theme Inflammation and Infection, at Karolinska University Hospital.

Your mission

We are looking for an associate professor with strong clinical and epidemiological research activities in infectious diseases who can lead and develop research in infectious diseases focusing on severe infections. The focus of the advertised position is to independently conduct research and develop new methods and infrastructure for detection, treatment and prevention of infections. The research is expected to focus on severe bacterial infections and health care associated infections.

The position includes teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The position is combined with clinical work as specialist physician at Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the person must have demonstrated research, teaching and clinical expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills. The ideal applicant is expected to perform internationally competitive clinical epidemiological research in infectious diseases, as documented by the quality and number of publications in international peer reviewed journals during the last five years. The applicant must demonstrate external funding acquired as main applicant during the last five years, and must further possess all the formal merits required for a clinical position at the Karolinska University Hospital.

The academic position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in infectious diseases at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Karolinska University Hospital. Therefore, the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in infectious diseases or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must demonstrate proficiency in Swedish corresponding to the C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, the applicant must manage the Swedish language in accordance with the Swedish Health and Medical Service Act.

Bases of assessment

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows:

research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

Since the position aims to strengthen the clinical research infrastructure, experience from such work, and from academic positions of trust, will be meritorious, as will experience from leadership and collaboration. Documented supervision of PhD students will be regarded as particularly meritorious.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
