The Division of Pathology
The research within the Division of Pathology include subjects as anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology and cell-and molecular biology, aiming to understand causes and mechanisms for development and progression of various disease conditions. The subject of Pathology is cross-boundary in its character and uses established and modern methods in approaching problems in the areas of cancer, inflammatory and immunological conditions as well as certain degenerative diseases.

Research in pathology is closely linked to the clinical diagnostic services in clinical pathology and cytology, and clinical samples are extensively used for research purposes, with an increasing number of samples that are stored in biobanks for future analyses. Education in pathology is provided both at the basic and advanced undergraduate levels and occupies a central part of the medical programme for physicians and dentists.

Research group
The research group of Associate Professor Jonas Fuxe is investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms of tissue remodeling in chronic inflammation and cancer metastasis. In particular, the emphasis is to elucidate how cancer cells acquire invasive and migratory properties and traffic through blood and lymphatic vessels during dissemination.

The postdoc will work under direct supervision of Dr. Fuxe whom currently is expanding his research group at the Division of Pathology. Part of the work will be performed in collaboration with Assistant Professor Theresa Vincent at Uppsala University, and with clinical researchers at Karolinska University Laboratory and Uppsala University.

The position
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher who has a solid background in using animal model systems, systems biology approaches and bioinformatic tools to study signaling mechanisms involved in tumor progression. The ideal candidate should also have experience in working with immunostaining, confocal microscopy and image analysis as well as an excellent command of written and spoken English.

Knowledge in tumor immunology and analysis of RNA sequencing data are important merits. The successful candidate should be able to integrate well with the international and multidisciplinary research environment and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The present position is a scholarship-funded 1-year position, with possible extension for a second year. Funding is available immediately.

Project description
The aim of the actual project is to study the role of epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity in cancer progression. More specifically, the project aims to identify the role of recently identified EMT markers in tumor cell dissemination through the lymphatic system in animal models. Imaging analysis will be also performed to study the possibility to use EMT markers as diagnostic tools for cancer progression.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within afour year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

 - A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work

- Personal letter of motivation
- A complete list of publications
- Names and details of at least two references

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
