The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.

Division
Karolinska Institutet Center for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (KIND) is a research center in the field of developmental cognitive disabilities (neuropsychological/neuropsychiatric developmental disorders). The center is a collaborative effort between the Karolinska Institute and Stockholm City Council with the aim of coordinating research within the field of cognitive disabilities, and to spread new knowledge through the development of methods, and education to health care, schools, social services, patients and relatives.

At KIND, several projects are carried out, such as to construct a comprehensive patient register for follow-up of quality, clinical research, and to establish a brain bank to study neuronal causes of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). There are several ongoing studies aiming at developing, evaluating, and implementing new instruments for assessments and treatments, as well as projects focusing at producing new guidelines and care plans. KIND is a part of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Research Center, and is an international and dynamic workplace with defined focus on enhancing coworkers’ knowledge, including participation in regular research seminars, journal clubs, lectures, and scientific conferences.

Roots of Autism Twin Study Sweden (RATSS) is a project at KIND where monozygotic twins discordant for ASD or other developmental psychiatric deficits are examined. In the project, basic etiological research is carried out to increase the knowledge about what is causing ASD, and the project will comprise genetic, epigenetic, neurological, anatomical, physiological as well as cognitive and psychopathological analyses. RATSS is also part of EU-AIMS, the largest ongoing research initiative on autism.
