Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) at Karolinska Institutet (KI) conducts world-leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. The research performed extends from basic molecular and cellular levels to clinical research and societal studies.

Our team

Professor Miia Kivipelto’s research group - the Nordic Brain Network (NBN) - is part of the division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The largest part of this multidisciplinary research team is located at KI (Solna-Stockholm), but team members are also present at the Karolinska University Hospital, in Finland and UK. Professor Kivipelto’s research group carries out research focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research team has carried out prevention trials (RCT) and is involved in several international collaborations and networks (https://ki.se/en/nvs/nordic-brain-network).

What do we do

Professor Kivipelto is the PI of the landmark FINGER RCT, the first large-scale trial showing that a multi-domain lifestyle-based intervention can benefit cognition in seniors at increased risk of dementia. Prof. Kivipelto is the Founder and Leader of the World-Wide FINGERS Network (WW-FINGERS, www.alz.org/wwfingers/), the first global network of multidomain lifestyle intervention RCTs for dementia risk reduction and prevention. WW-FINGERS aims to adapt, test and optimize the FINGER model in different populations. Since its inception in 2017 the Network has been growing exponentially, with over 25 countries across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Data harmonization, management and sharing, and data analysis planning are crucial steps that need to be addressed within the WW-FINGERS.

Your mission

The candidate will be part of the NBN Biostatistics team, and will report to the team leader (Senior Biostatistician). Through the Biostatistics team, the candidate will contribute to the development of strategies for data management, harmonization and sharing within the WW-FINGERS. The candidate will also have a role in the development of the analytical plans, and ultimately support the implementation of all the above listed items.
Other duties and opportunities for professional development come from other datasets being managed and used within the NBN, including population-based and clinical-based datasets, from observational and intervention studies. These datasets are utilized within various research projects, and the candidate is expected to support the data organization, planning and execution of data analysis, participation in the preparation of scientific articles, as well as support with supervision of PhD-students.
Given that the NBN is located in three countries (Sweden, Finland, UK), international traveling is expected.
The candidate is expected to engage with several projects in parallel, and will have opportunities for further education and skills development. This will give the candidate the possibility to further develop his/her role and career. This includes the possibility to conduct own epidemiological research.

Your profile

To qualify, the candidate must have a degree in a field relevant to biostatistics; experience in using statistical software (STATA, SAS, R) independently; and previous experience with large datasets and clinical trial statistics. We are seeking an applicant who has previous experience with more complex statistical methods for longitudinal data analysis (including clinical trial data analysis), and who is able to independently contribute to statistical protocol design.
Applicants with a PhD related to the field (epidemiology, age-related cognitive impairment and dementia), and prior research experience dealing with neuroimaging data will be given a higher rank. A strong publication record, as well as successful grant applications (in competition) are desirable.
Excellent spoken and written English is required. The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and a positive, problem solving attitude, and be an active team player in our large and dynamic multidisciplinary group. Great importance is attributed to collaboration abilities, pedagogical and communications skills, as a substantial part of the work involves collaborating with others, including participation in the supervision of PhD candidates.
