Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have approximately 400 employees and 90 doctoral students working in 30 research groups.

The department is located within the brand new Biomedicum Research center on the Solna Campus of Karolinska Institute. Departmental research interests include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology, and pain. Our collaborations with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provide unique opportunities for translational research within these subjects. More information about our research can be found here.

Molecular physiology is concerned with increasing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie skeletal muscle-related intra- and inter-organ communication in living organisms. In addition, research in molecular physiology aims to provide novel targets for the development of therapeutic methods for e.g. muscle diseases and related comorbidities.

Your mission

The main tasks consist of research, research education and teaching related to the subject of molecular physiology. Research should be conducted in areas relevant to understanding of gene regulation and of the molecular details of how tissues and organs coordinate their functions at a systemic level. It is expected that the Professor will take responsibility for the management of her/his research group, as well as initiate and take responsibility for significant efforts in undergraduate teaching and particularly in education at the advanced and postgraduate level. Through active research and efforts in science, research education and teaching, the applicant is expected to contribute to the development of physiology research at the Karolinska Institute.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise, as well as management-, development- and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

This position is focused on research aimed at understanding molecular mechanisms that mediate skeletal muscle adaptations, with emphasis on how exercised or sedentary skeletal muscle can crosstalk with other organs, and impact on individual health. Documented experience of high level of scientific research within these areas of molecular physiology is therefore mandatory. Thus, the applicant should be an internationally leading researcher in this aspect of molecular physiology with high quality publications in leading international journals over the past ten years and the potential to continue to be a leading international researcher in the field.

The applicant must have received significant research funding as a principal investigator from national and international funding agencies over the past five years and show a clear potential for continued and additional funding in the research area.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1) and leadership-, development- and collaboration expertise (1).

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching (or have equivalent competence) in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
