The Department of Neuroscience has the mission to conduct groundbreaking research on the nervous system. Our 35 research groups work on all levels from cellular to cognitive neuroscience. We now intend to strengthen the systems level with a new position. We offer a dynamic research environment in the new Biomedicum building, in which 5 basic science departments are hosted, offering a multidisciplinary environment with top-level core facilities. The successful candidate will play an important role in advancing systems neuroscience.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research.

The successful professor is expected to conduct cutting-edge research in systems neuroscience including the development of tools and principles to investigate the organization of neuronal circuits and the function of neurons and circuits in the control of behavior. The position also involves education at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as administrative academic duties.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

 The new professor is expected to pursue an independent line of research within the subject area at the international level. The applicant must have excellent competence in the characterization of the nervous system with significant contributions to the elucidation of neuronal circuits and the function of neurons and networks in vivo during specific behaviors.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

Particular merit is given to excellence in research on systems neuroscience, with prominent publications in the large-scale characterization of the structure and function of the nervous system through the development and application of state-of-the-art methodologies to record, analyze and manipulate neural activity in behaving animals. The candidate must have also demonstrated proficiency and independence in securing substantial competitive research funding.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks of higher education pedagogical training in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher (or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge). If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will select the candidate with the best potential to successfully contribute to the progress of the discipline of systems neuroscience.
