The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, cognitive disorders, epidemiology and care sciences. The research is multifaceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The division of Clinical Geriatrichs, one of seven divisions within NVS conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, but also on education among other medical graduates. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, diagnostics and registry studies.  We have a close cooperation with the Theme Ageing at Karolinska University Hospital.. Assistant professor to be hired will be working in the research group of Associate Professor Eric Westman and of Professor Miia Kivipelto for a period of four years. 

Your mission

A major task for the applicant will be to contribute to the ongoing research activities at the division of clinical geriatrics, conceptually as well as methodologically. In particular, the person is expected to take a leading role in coordinating the research procedure in an ongoing clinical multi-center study, and to develop and evaluate psychological interventions for individuals with early phase cognitive impairments. The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency and be able to work in a team and be willing to supervise students. Moreover, the candidate is expected to have broad knowledge and expertise in aging research, cognitive disorders, neuro-cognitive assessments, psychological treatment, data gathering, data analysis as well as manuscript preparation. Coordination of projects within the division and writing grant applications are also duties included as part of the position.

Eligebility requirements

We seek for a scientist with a minimum of three years postdoc experience in the field of neuroimaging, neuropsychology, and psychological interventions in healthy aging and cognitive disorder research. The candidate should be able to conduct advanced image data processing/analysis (Freesurfer, SPM and FSL), conduct advanced neuropsychological examinations, and have a broad experience in psychological/cognitive interventions.
To be eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor you need to have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as Assistant professor. 

Bases of assesment

We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants. A strong track record in terms of publications, research experience, coordination skills as well as clinical psychological experience. Documented experience in longitudinal analysis of imaging and neuropsychological data is required. Clinical experience is highly valued, especially in neuropsychological assessments and psychological treatment. Teaching experience is required, as well as documented experience in supervision (main or cosupervisor) of students. The applicant is expected to show independence in terms of research initiatives as well as to have good collaborative skills. Good communication skills in the Swedish language is required to be able to coordinate the different projects in respect of communication with patients and clinicians.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
