Your mission

The Neuro division has a long history of successful research within neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and brain and spinal cord injuries. Much of this research today focuses on the role of neuroinflammation in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, to an increasing degree including genetic and epigenetic research methods. The researchers within the division have significantly contributed to the rapid progress in this field and have been successful in attracting internationally competitive research funding. This has led to advances such as identification of disease-specific epigenetic changes associated to environmental factors, and to discovery of new potential therapies.

Currently, there are seven professors in neurology at the Neuro division, most of whom have a research focus towards neuroinflammation. It is now important to strengthen the methodological competence within epigenetic studies of neuroinflammation to consolidate the internationally leading position of the research within the division. The position as a Professor in neuroinflammation, is ideal for a competitive researcher with an established research group, and a strong track record of combining epigenetic methods development with studies on neuroinflammation, involving both animals and humans. The employment has a focus on research, and the applicant is expected to perform research at an internationally high standard. The employment requires that the applicant also participates in graduate, postgraduate and doctoral education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise, as well as management-, development- and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented experience of having carried out internationally competitive research in the area of epigenetic methods development and neuroinflammation, as well as obtaining research funding in competition within this research area. The applicant shall demonstrate a high proficiency in written and spoken English.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

It is considered a merit if the applicant has combined epigenetic methods development with studies on neuroinflammation, involving both animals and humans. It is also considered a merit if the applicant has demonstrated collaborations with clinicians, and has well-established national and international collaborations within the fields of neuroinflammation and epigenetics. Training in, and experience from, academic leadership is also a merit.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI in general, and to the activities at the Neuro division, CNS, in particular.
