Karolinska Institutet, Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology, Karlsson-Hedestam

We are seeking a mathematician at the post-doctoral level to work in the team of Dr Ben Murrell at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Dr Murrell studies various aspects of computational biology, virology, and immunology, focusing on evolution and sequence analysis. For a list of publications, see here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=I80vy5cAAAAJ

Research area
Dr Murrell’s research addresses methodological problems in computational biology, including those related to:

  • Long-read next generation sequence analysis.
  • Molecular evolution and phylogenetics.
  • Understanding the co-evolution of neutralizing antibodies and HIV.
  • Various topics in biological data analysis.

These topics frequently encounter mathematical hurdles, and the team is looking to recruit a mathematician to assist.

The responsibilities/duties include:
Solving mathematical problems and implementing their solutions in the Julia language for scientific computing, where appropriate. Driving mathematical development of the team by pointing out where advanced mathematical techniques can be brought to bear on problems typically approach by the team. Analysis of datasets using the mathematical techniques developed.

Qualifications
Applicants should have:

1) A PhD in Mathematics, with strong foundations in linear algebra, PDEs, and topics related to the calculus of variations.

2) An interest in, and a basic understanding of biology (equivalent to at least two years of undergraduate study).

3) Strong English proficiency.

Skills and personal qualities While no formal machine learning or statistical modelling experience is required, the successful candidate will have a strong interest in learning these topics and applying them to problems in computational biology. The individual should be highly driven and be able to work independently, while also being able to communicate effectively with other members of the team.

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants using the following bases of assessment:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research

- Analytical skill, which may be assessed by a technical interview

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral
  studies in the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

Application process
The application should contain the following documents in English:

  • A personal letter and summary of current work (about one page).
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A copy of degree certificates and associated certificates

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
