Karolinska Institutet, the Department of Medicine, Huddinge

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join the research group of Eva Hellström Lindberg as a Postdoctoral Fellow to further elucidate molecular pathways underlying pathogenesis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Recent studies from our group on this subject encompass Rydén, et al., Leukemia 2018, Shiozawa, et al., Blood 2017, Mortera Blanco, et al., Blood 2017, Dimitriou, et al., Oncotarget 2016, Conte, et al., Br J Haematology 2015; Malcovati, et al, Blood 2015, Nikpour, et al. Leukemia 2013, Woll, et al., Cancer Cell 2014. We are exploring MDS pathogenesis using a broad omics approach based on a unique clinical database and biobank combined with detailed studies of hemopoietic stem and progenitor cells. The project will take place within the frame of a major collaborative research grant and a large personal grant from the Wallenberg Foundation.

Methods will involve advanced flow cytometry and sorting, DNA and RNA sequencing, single-cell sequencing, advanced cell culture systems, imaging techniques, and functional analyses of stem and progenitor cells.

The Research group
The research group is based at the Center of Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM), Karolinska Institutet. HERM consists of 16 research groups and approximately 100 people and is a nationally leading and internationally competitive environment for studies of hematopoiesis, blood disorders and the human immune system in the context of malignancy and infectious diseases. The vision is to become one of the leading translational research centers in Europe within this field. The environment offers state-of-the art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry and microscopy facilities. In the http://ki.se/en/medh/eva-hellstrom-lindberg-group, you will be working in an international and interdisciplinary research environment, where collaborative efforts are encouraged.

Duties
You are expected to be a talented and enthusiastic researcher with a strong drive to perform translational research, be instrumental in the elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design, experimentation, data analysis and presentation/publication of results. You must be a good team player but still retain enough independence to explore your results from a conceptual standpoint. You will be responsible for your own academic, research and administrative activities, adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques, test hypotheses and analyze data from a variety of sources. To pursue these projects a thorough knowledge of the clinical aspects of MDS is essential.

Besides working on existing lab projects, postdocs are encouraged to start their own new projects that can serve to launch their independent careers in science. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment for development of independent scientists.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for postdoctoral studies you must have a PhD in Medicine, Cell, Molecular Biology or related sciences, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Excellent spoken and written English is a requirement. Applicants should have first author publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals. The position requires experience with some of the above described methodologies including managing advanced clinical databases, but more important is a capacity for scientific thinking, high ambition, and collaborative and communicative skills.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
