The Department of Clinical Science and Education Södersjukhuset, pursues undergraduate education, doctoral education and internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and injuries. The goal of all activities is to improve human health. The department has about 50 employees, 80 graduate students, 140 affiliated researchers and a turnover of 70 million. The department is divided into research groups and education where orthopedics inheres to the surgical course of the undergraduate medical program. Within orthopedics, medical students as well as nurses are educated, foremost through clinical placements. There is also a well-established Interprofessional student ward (KUA), which focuses on clinical interprofessional teamwork. The research group in orthopedics has a long tradition of clinical research and does today consist of one Professor, one Senior Lecturer, 5 Associate Professors, 14 PhDs and 8 doctoral (PhD) students.

Your mission

The employment as Professor and specialist in orthopedic surgery involves an overall responsibility for the clinical education and research within the field of orthopedics at KI SÖS as well as developing research regarding common diseases and injuries, in collaboration with other departments within KI. The employment will include responsibility for courses and master theses within the undergraduate medical program as well as being research group leader. An important part of the work will be to develop an academical leadership within pedagogy and research within the field of orthopedics.

The Professorship will be combined with clinical duty as specialist trained physician at the Department of Orthopaedics at Södersjukhuset, where clinical- experience and knowledge is of great importance to be able to organize the clinical education and research in the best way possible. The employment involves 50% clinical work and 50% teaching and research. 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise, as well as management-, development- and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet). The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge.

The applicant must have experience of clinical education within medical programs, have experience of clinical work and have experience of supervision on different levels as well as presenting ability to obtain research grants.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in orthopedic surgery at Södersjukhuset and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in orthopedic surgery, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3), leadership-, development- and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
