The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
Unit of Biochemical Toxicology
The objective of our research is to understand the connection between exposure to chemicals/particles and diseases. We work with cellular models to identify and characterize molecular and biochemical processes that are induced by exposure to various toxic substances. We also focus on risk assessment and work related to adverse outcome pathways. We are now recruiting a Post Doc who will work with Associate Professor Hanna Karlsson in a project related to development of in vitro assays for detecting skin sensitizing potencies of chemicals and metals.
Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated Post Doc with interest and experience in experimental toxicology. The Post Doc will culture cells (keratinocytes, monocytes), exposed them to chemicals and metals with known or unknown skin sensitizing properties, and analyze various markers. The overall aim is to find markers that may be used in a future in vitro test battery to accurately detect skin sensitization potency of chemicals and metals. Co-cultures and/or Reconstructed Human Epidermis may also be used.
Qualifications
The applicant is expected to be an enthusiastic candidate with a strong knowledge within cell biology and toxicology/immunology. Experience in cell culturing and assessment of toxicity/immune effects is required. Previous work with assessment of toxicity/immune effects using different techniques such as ELISA/multiplexing, flow cytometry, microscopy, Western blot and RT-PCR is preferable and experience in work with co-cultures or skin models is meritorious. The candidate must be able to work within a team with scientists from different disciplines and fluency in English is a requirement.
Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.
